What’s the question you ask—or get asked—the most as a freelance medical writer?

Where do you find work?
It’s such a loaded question, right? It feels impossible to answer succinctly in a LinkedIn message or a quick call.
The answer has evolved throughout my 3 years as a freelancer, and I’ve been continually surprised by where work comes from.

Another time, I received two requests for discovery calls after one virtual training session, just for introducing myself and what I do. One of these connections led to £2k of work.
These experiences drive home something I’ve learned time and again: being creative about how and where you look for work is a game-changer.
And the best opportunities often come from the places and people you would least expect.
As freelancers, we’re constantly juggling marketing ourselves and client work. If we don’t have new opportunities in the pipeline, it’s easy to feel like we’re in freefall.
The good news? You can build a safety net by expanding where and how you search for work.
It gets better: at a certain point, client relationships take centre stage. Instead of constantly chasing new clients, you can focus on nurturing the connections you’ve already built.
That’s my focus for 2025: prioritising maintaining strong client relationships over constantly building new ones.
A check-in email, thoughtful comment on LinkedIn, or going the extra mile on a project can keep you top of mind.
Over time, these relationships will start working for you.
- Referrals? Old clients are your biggest champions.
- Social proof? Returning clients (and their glowing testimonials) speak volumes about the quality of your work.
- Reliability? You can count on long-term clients when everything else feels uncertain.

5 Creative Ways To Find Your Next Client
1. Leverage niche platforms. Use platforms like HireSpace, Kolabtree, and AMWA’s job board to connect with clients who need your expertise. Explore medical writing communities like Write Medicine or Prospology for added opportunities. Here are eight examples of great places to start.
2. Turn connections into opportunities. A simple check-in with former colleagues, LinkedIn connections, or fellow medical writers—“How are things on your end?”—can spark new projects.
3. Pitch to content-heavy organisations—or respond to calls for pitches. Target medical societies, universities, or pharmaceutical companies with regular content needs. Spot a gap? Pitch a solution. Stay alert for editors calling for pitches that align with your expertise.
4. Join professional groups and communities. Groups like AMWA, EMWA, ACEHP, and ICJME offer networking, education, and job postings. Active participation keeps you visible and connected.
5. Market yourself where your clients hang out. Whether at conferences, webinars, or online communities, show up where your clients are. Visibility opens doors to new opportunities.
A Few Bonus Tips for 2025
- Follow up, follow up, follow up.
- Diversify your marketing efforts. Last year (can’t believe we are saying that!) I found work through social media, my website, and in-person networking.
- Don’t put all your eggs in one basket (even if the basket is lucrative.)
Remember: building a thriving freelance career isn’t about instant results. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
But with persistence and creativity, you’ll position yourself for long-term success—and plenty of opportunities.
